I’m always on the lookout for meaningful and fun activities that will get my kids thinking about other people.
Kindness and empathy can’t be forced, but they can certainly be practiced, don’t you think? So I look for any opportunity I can to direct my children’s attention outwards, beyond just themselves and their small corner of the world.
Here’s my best piece of advice for practicing kindness with kids: think simple. When looking for activities that might foster a sense of empathy or outward thinking, it’s important to keep the ideas concrete and easy to understand, especially for young ones. And if the project’s fun and engaging? Even better!
That’s why I LOVE this rock painting kit from Creativity for Kids.
My kids had a blast decorating rocks and hiding them in our neighborhood in the hopes of bringing a smile to someone’s face. A totally fun and simple way to practice thinking of others. Success!
How to Use the Rock Painting Kit
- Prep your work area
Cover your work area with paper or a tablecloth. And be sure to wear old clothes or a smock – we’ve found that these paints will stain fabric.
- Paint your rocks
Use the provided paints and brushes to paint your rocks. You can either paint a base coat of white or paint more than one coat to get a more vibrant coverage.
The box has lots of fun ideas for inspiration!
Let the rocks dry completely before painting a second coat or applying the decals. - Add decal stickers
Adding the decals to the rocks is much like applying a temporary tattoo. Cut out the decal you’d like to use and remove the plastic film.
Place the decal face down on the rock (either a plain or painted rock will work but it needs to be completely dry).
Wet the provided sponge and place it on the decal and press firmly. We counted to 30 and then removed the paper.
We had mixed results with the decals and found that a good amount of water and time were needed, as well as adult assistance, to get a good transfer.
- Hide your rocks!
Once your rocks are decorated and dry, you can take them outside and hide them. The kids had the best time coming up with special spots in the neighborhood for them!

Creativity for Kids: Hide & Seek Rock Painting Kit
Things we liked: Although you can scavenge your own rocks, this kit comes pre-packaged with everything you need. Our associate editor, Andrea, used this kit with her kids two years ago and the rocks in her garden have held up well (even through Maine winters) without paint chipping!
What we might change: The decals are a bit tricky to apply without tearing, especially for age 7 on and younger. For a successful stick, have an adult on hand to help make the transfer.
Where to Buy: You can purchase the Hide & Seek Rock Painting Kit from Faber-Castell’s website directly. Or look for it at your local toy, craft or big box stores (I’ve spotted it at Target).
