Learn how to create DIY space geoboards for kids in 4 easy steps. A great activity to connect with study about space for kids.
Space geoboards are one of my favorite activities and one that we keep revisiting over and over again. My youngest son, Manolo was around 4 years old when we first tried it.
At the time, he was obsessed with space: the planets, the moon, black holes, satellites, constellations, astronauts––you name it. We read a number of books (over and over and over and OVER again). I’m sure you know how that goes!
One night, after reading through the Space Encyclopedia with my sons, the idea of geoboards hit me. It seemed like such a fun way to dig deeper into our space studies.
This is a fun project that involves a great process AND a really cool final piece to hang up.
This activity provides a great opportunity to connect it with a book or a conversation about space.
- What is space?
- What color is it?
- How many planets do we know?
- What is stardust like?
- How big is the sun compared to the planets in our solar system or to the moon?
- How far does a rocket travel to make it to space?
There are so many questions and so many different answers.
Space geoboards are a great way to spark kids’ imaginations and get them interested in translating their ideas into these geoboards.
How to Make DIY Space Geoboards
MATERIALS
- Black paint (tempera or acrylic)
- Silver or gold fine glitter
- Push Pins
- Markers
- Mini Stars or star stickers
- Cork Round (ours are from IKEA)
- White Paper or Label Sheets
- Loom bands in any color
- Glue
- Scissors
- Round colored stickers (optional)
Time needed: 1 hour
INSTRUCTIONS
- Paint the cork round
Start by painting the cork round black. You can mix in a little “stardust” (glitter) to the black paint to make it shiny.
- Create the pieces of your galaxy
While the cork round dries, start working on the planets, moon, earth and anything you want to add to your Geo Board. Use markers on white paper or a white label sheet (these have a sticky side) for this.
- Add the pieces
Cut out the pieces (planets, earth, moon etc) and glue them (or stick them if using a label sheet) to the now dry cork round.
Add stars and round stickers too, if you have them. - Create constellations!
Next, form the constellations by adding push pins to your geoboard in any shape you like.
Lastly, to finish your constellations, add the loom bands in the color of your preference.
That’s it! This is such a super simple and super fun activity for kids!
Hang the finished DIY space geoboards on the wall or tape a beaded string to the back and hang!
