Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Check out our list of Earth Day activities with nature and recycled art projects for kids that are fun to make AND more friendly for our Earth.

Updated March 2024

To celebrate Earth Day next week, our team gathered together a list of 30 Earth Day activities for kids.

Through art, there exists a great opportunity to teach children to be good stewards.  Children learn to reuse lids, caps and milk cartons. To turn a cardboard box into a castle, fort, or robot. To recycle cardboard tubes and create sculptures.

The possibility to assemble and make new things while recycling or upcycling the old sparks children’s imagination as they explore these non-traditional materials.

And a short walk outside with my son allows us the opportunity to breathe deep, soak in the sunshine and fresh air. We gather pinecones and sticks, some rocks and more sticks. Then to head home with our new treasures.

As we collect recyclables, save cardboard and consider how to give something old a new purpose, our kids are watching and learning this skill themselves. Below are some ideas that will hopefully inspire and put some of that recycling bin to creative use.

Happy Earth Day!

Is it unbreakable? No. But neither is fired pottery. And it is quite strong.

We use and love Crayola Air Dry Clay and have for years.
The quality is good, the price is reasonable, and there’s just so much that can be done with it!

You can get Crayola Air Dry Clay at most big box stores, craft stores, or online.

This drawing activity for kids about drawing vegetables above and below in the garden is from Drawing Workshop for Kids by Samara Caughey.

Updated April 2024

I love the visual representation of things happening above and below the ground. And it’s especially interesting to draw what’s happening underground, where one can’t normally see.

These representations reveal the mystery of the underground along with the little creatures that may be living there.

A really fun way to try this is to try drawing vegetables above and below the ground. It encourages kids to work on their observational skills – looking closely and drawing what they see. And it gives them the opportunity to draw, paint, and collage.

This drawing activity is featured in my book, Drawing Workshop for Kids, and provides a great way to talk to children about composition because the artwork is separated into two sections.

Drawing Vegetables

MATERIALS

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Observe the vegetables

Lay the vegetables out on the table. Allow the kids to engage with them by feeling and looking at the ones that interest them. The kids will likely discuss which vegetable they like or don’t like, along with the colors and size.

  2. Draw the vegetables

Have the children choose at least four vegetables to draw onto the watercolor paper. They might choose four carrots or four radishes or a combination of all the veggies.

    drawing vegetables

The veggies can be placed anywhere on the paper because they will be cut out later.

  3. Add color

When finished drawing, the children can use watercolor pencils to color in the vegetables.
Don’t wet the pencils for this project but add water with a small paintbrush after filling in the vegetables and greens with color.

The children will be amazed by the transformation of the pencil marks to spreading color.

    drawing vegetables

  4. Create the rubbings

While the watercolor drawings are drying, children can begin work on the rubbings. These will be the soil in the garden.

Encourage the children to look around the house or outside to find textures for the rubbings. Walls, sides of baskets, backs of chairs that may have a pattern, trees, sidewalks, and brick buildings all are great sources of patterns for rubbings.

Show the children how to lay the paper onto the texture. Use the flat, long side of the charcoal stick or crayon and rub it over the paper. The kids can collect as many textures as they like to fill their entire piece of paper.

  5. Create the garden collage

It’s time to collage the garden all together.

First, the children can cut out their vegetables.

    cut out paper vegetables

Then have the children place the drawing paper in a vertical orientation.
Cut the paper rubbing to the same size as the bottom half of the paper. You can also rip one side to mimic the roughness of the top layer of ground.

    arranging paper vegetables

Encourage the children to add their vegetables and move them around a bit. Have them wait until the pieces are arranged just how they like them before gluing in place.

Use a brush to paint glue onto the vegetables and then press them firmly onto the drawing paper.

    glueing vegetables

  6. Add garden details

Finally, the children can create bugs with paper, pencils or markers. They can add bugs that live underground or bugs that fly in the sky!

Learn how to make friendship bracelets that are sweet and simple to make. The whole family will get into this fun beading activity!

Have you joined the friendship bracelet club? Whether you’re a Swiftie or not, friendship bracelets are enjoying a vibrant comeback right now with their nostalgic charm and customizable designs.

Friendship bracelets are a blast for kids to make. They combine creativity and manual dexterity, allowing kids to design unique accessories that they can keep or give to friends. Plus, the hands-on process of threading colorful beads onto string or cords fosters fine motor skills.

We make lots of friendship bracelets at our house, and it usually ends up that the entire family is gathered around the table, stringing beads on in all kinds of patterns.

And if you’ve got little ones at home, they can be included in the fun! We’ve got lots of fun bead bracelet ideas for little kids!

How to Make Friendship Bracelets

MATERIALS

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Prepare materials

Before you begin beading, cut the elastic cord to a comfortable length for a bracelet, usually around 10-12 inches. We typically tape one end to a tray and wrap a piece of tape around the other end, to make for easier beading.

Gather a variety of beads in different colors, shapes, and sizes.

    bracelet making materials

  2. Thread beads

This is the fun part! String your beads onto your elastic cord in any pattern you’d like. If you have letter beads, you can make your name, or a friend’s name!

    starting a bracelet

Keep beading! You’ll be amazed at how quickly a bracelet comes together.

    making a bracelet

  3. Tie the bracelet off

Measure the bracelet around your wrist and make any necessary adjustments.

Once the beads are threaded, tie a secure knot at the ends of the cord to hold the beads in place. Double or triple knot to ensure it’s tight and won’t unravel easily. You can also use a drop of craft glue to secure it. Trim the excess cord.

    friendship bracelet

Now you can wear your bracelet! Or give it to a friend! And get ready to make your next one, because we find that we can never make just one!

Gelatin printmaking is a fun and easy process for kids and adults alike. Check out these printing techniques to get you started!

Updated February 2024

Gelatin printmaking is a form of monoprinting, meaning each print you pull is unique. No two prints are the same. The emphasis is on the process of creating and experimenting rather than the final outcome.

The process is fairly easy, and so much fun. Trust us, if you haven’t tried gelatin printmaking yet, it is addicting!

We really love to use Gelli Arts gel printing plates, but you can also make your own.

Here’s a video tutorial showing how to make your own gelatin plate.

Easy Gelatin Printmaking for Kids

MATERIALS

*Easy Clean Up Tip: Acrylic paint is recommended for gelatin printmaking but in our experience, washable paint worked just fine and made clean up much easier when printmaking with children.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Prep your work area

We like working on a tray, to keep the mess contained. You can also put newspaper or a tablecloth down.

  2. Add paint to your plate

Squirt some paint onto your printing plate. Roll out the paint with the brayer.

    paint on gelli plate

  3. Add a design for printing

There are several different ways to make designs for printing.

The first is a hand-drawn design: Use the end of a paint brush to gently draw a design in the paint. If you mess up, you can just roll the paint out again, and redraw it.

design drawn in paint on gelli plate

The second is cut paper stencils: First, cut out paper shapes. Place your paper shapes on top of the paint rolled on the plate.

cut paper design on gelatin printing

The third is a bubble wrap print: Press a sheet of bubble wrap onto the painted plate and lift up, leaving a bubble wrap design.

    bubble wrap gelatin printing

  4. Press your paper to the plate

Once you have your design on the gelatin plate, place a piece of sturdy paper over the top of your print and rub firmly on top of the paper.

  5. Pull your print!

Lift to reveal your design and pull your print.

    drawn design on gelatin printing

Usually, you can pull more than one print at a time. Try placing an additional piece of paper to create a second or third print.

What we like most about gelatin printmaking is layering the different techniques on top of each other. Try layering the first and second technique on one piece of paper.

Danielle Falk of Little Ginger Studio shares how to make a rainbow cardboard sculpture for kids. This is a fun and easy 3D activity that kids will love to build!

Updated February 2024

Cardboard is the best art material out there! It’s free, versatile and readily available. And it can be shaped into countless art projects.

I’ve turned into a bit of a “connoisseur of cardboard” over the years. Because of this I recommend IKEA for cardboard that’s strong and possible for little hands to cut through. Also, LEGO and NESPRESSO pod boxes provide cardboard that is super versatile for art making.

For these rainbow cardboard sculptures, we slot the shapes together loosely (inspiration from Eames’ House of cards). It’s the sort of connecting technique that can be used to make many different sculptures.

This is a technique I’ve often used to make groovy cardboard dinosaurs. Today I’m going to show you how to make our ever-popular cardboard rainbow sculptures! Everyone loves rainbows, right?

3D Rainbow Cardboard Sculptures for Kids

MATERIALS

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Cut cardboard pieces.

First, use a pencil to draw a rainbow shape (elongated semi-circle) onto some cardboard. Then cut it out (an adult may need to help with this depending on the thickness of the cardboard).

  2. Rainbow stencil.

Now use the rainbow as a template stencil to trace more rainbows the same size.

  3. Cut out rainbow shapes.

Next, carefully cut out all the rainbow shapes.

  4. Color the rainbows.

Then use paint or drawing materials to add color to your cardboard rainbows. You might create naturalistic rainbows with the color spectrum or mix up your color order any old way you please.

I used a wide range of art supplies to create my rainbow but use what you have at home. This activity is a great impromptu creative prompt since you really don’t need any fancy supplies!

    painted rainbows

  5. Cut the slots in the rainbows.

Next, cut two slots into the top and two slots in the bottom of your cardboard rainbow (about an inch or 2.54cm long).

Pro tip: The bottom two rainbows won’t need slots along the bottom edge as this looks a lot neater.

  6. Build your sculpture.

Now carefully slot the rainbows together to make a standing rainbow that can balance.

    putting rainbows together (1)

It’s very important that each slot slots into another slot. This is what gives the sculpture its strength. Don’t try to slot it without a second slot or your sculpture will be flimsy and fall apart.

  7. Get creative.

Continue adding to your sculpture until you think it’s finished. Once you get the hang of building with slotted cardboard you can experiment with different arrangements of slots (different shapes and even making GIANT slotted sculptures)! Personally, I’m itching to do this!

How to Print with Leaves

MATERIALS

  • Newspaper or an art mat and scrap paper
  • Spoon
  • Fabric Paint
  • Large plate or acrylic box frame, for rolling out the ink
  • Mini paint roller
  • Leaves and ferns
  • Plain white or light-colored cloth napkins, or make your own
  • Brayer (hard rubber roller) or rolling pin
  • Iron
  • Ironing board

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Prep your work surface

Prepare for leaf printing by protecting your work surface with newspaper or an art mat. Gather all of your materials.

  2. Roll your paint

Put a couple of spoonfuls of fabric paint on the plate. Roll it around with the paint roller to coat the roller thinly.

  3. Paint your leaf

Place a leaf, vein side up, on a sheet of newspaper or scrap paper. Roll the paint roller over the leaf to coat it evenly.

  4. Make the print

Set the leaf, paint side down, on the napkin where you want the print. Set a clean piece of paper over the leaf.

Roll the brayer over the paper-covered leaf to press it down evenly. Carefully lift up the paper and leaf to reveal your print.

How to play a fun and collaborative family drawing game. Create portraits by trading drawings and adding new features. Catalina of RedViolet Studio shares how to play the exquisite corpse game.

Updated August 2023

One of the things we have come to really enjoy lately is our creative family sessions. Sitting down around a table, and just creating; sometimes with specific prompts, but mainly through fun games and open ended exploration of materials.

Those who know me, know I love a good ol’ art family game, and we’ve done quite a few, but today I want to share one of our family favorites.

This is sometimes called the exquisite corpse game, or the combination man game, but whatever you call it, it is a blast for kids and adults of all ages!

A Fun Family Drawing Game

MATERIALS

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Prepare the supplies

Have 3 or more family members (or friends) sit at a table. Place a piece of paper and a black Sharpie in front of each person.

  2. Draw a part of the head

Ask everyone to choose a person from the table and challenge that person to draw a part of the head or face. It can be the nose, eyes, mouth, ears, head outline, etc. Any single part.

  3. Pass the drawing

As soon as everyone is done drawing the first feature, pass the paper to the person sitting to your right.

  4. Begin drawing another feature

Now another family member (or friend) will tell you what to draw next: maybe it’s the eyebrows this time, or teeth, or hair, a beard, or mustache. Anything goes. Just keep in mind that we are focusing only on portraits, from the neck up.

  5. Continue drawing and trading drawings

Then keep it going. Swap papers again so everyone gets at least one chance to draw on every paper, until the silly (oh, believe me they will end up being quite silly!) faces are finished.

  6. Don’t forget accessories!

Some other fun things to add to the drawings are accessories such as: sunglasses, hats, earrings, piercings, etc. All of these will add character to your drawings.
You can keep going with this paper swapping for as long as you wish, or until you think the faces are pretty much done.

  7. Now add color!

Next, bring in the fun supplies you have around to add some color to the faces. We used watercolors, but you can use markers, crayons, pastels, paints or anything you wish!

  8. Show off your finished drawing.

Finally, show off your funky faces and maybe even give them names. And kids can also write a brief description of the characters to extend this fun activity even more!

We really enjoyed this activity. It was a fun unwinding session where we got to laugh and create at the same time. I hope you give it a try, and if you do, please share your creations with me as I would love to see them!

Catalina Gutierrez of Redviolet Studio shares her 5 favorite after-school art invitations for kids. Her boys loved these and they’re easy to set up in under 5 minutes!

Updated August 2023

After my children were born, I started experimenting with all kinds of activities and invitations to distract them, engage them, and secretly buy myself some time to do other things around the house, or maybe just drink a cup of tea in peace.

I would often try to set up simple invitations to create or explore. And I found that not only did they really enjoy them, but it was a fun and playful way to work on certain skills.

Basically, an invitation to create is both an opportunity to entice a child to make art as well as an opportunity to introduce a new material, technique, or activity.

Here are a few simple after school art invitations for school aged kids that are on my favorite list. These are ones my kids have loved, and I hope yours will too.

Keep in mind that you can make these after-school art invitations as simple or complex as you wish; you can always add more materials or work around what you have at home to make it easy to set up in less than 5 minutes.

MATERIALS (These are all the materials needed for these 5 activities)

Creating gift tags with stamps, stickers and markers

1. Sticker Making

This is one of our all-time favorites! We’ve been making stickers for years and the boys still love it.

All you need is white sticker paper (or white sticky labels) and markers.  I’ve collected stamps over the years, so we’ll use those for extra fun.  But you don’t really need these.

They can start by drawing on the white side of the paper or label (make sure they are not drawing on the sticky side). Another fun option is to stamp and color their stamp outlines and then cut out their own sticker creations. I guarantee you at least an hour or more of fun!

2. Make Your Own Gift Tags

This is another favorite as kids love the idea of working on a smaller format.

I pre-cut a bunch of small squares and rectangles (about 3×4 or 4x4in) out of sturdy white paper and set it out on the table next to markers and/or watercolors and let them go to town. If you have stickers, you can set those out, too.

My kids have been making and giving these for years and they enjoy it so much. I often join in the process as I find it to be relaxing and fun.

3. Watercolors & Oil Pastels

Don’t be afraid to bring some paint into the game! Watercolors are washable and easy to clean up. And once you mix them with oil pastels the effect is super cool because the oil pastels resist the paint, and the colors pop out really nicely. You can do this with nice watercolor paper or just white cardboard.

This is a relaxing activity, perfect to wind down after a hectic school day.

4. Observational Drawings

I know the name sounds fancy, but I promise this is really fun and easy to set up. I’ve done it with lots of different things.

Sometimes I use simple stuff I have around the house, like flowers, toys or fruits. When I’m feeling inspired, I bring in something more fun like cupcakes or donuts and set them right in the middle of the table next to paper, markers, or any kind of paint you have.

And then I ask the boys try and focus on the objects (or food) on the table and draw/paint them from observation.

5. Playdough or Clay Creations

Almost every household has some playdough lying around so this is an easy one to set up. My kids (age 7 & 9) prefer clay over playdough, so I will also do this with air dry clay.

Set out either the playdough or the clay next to some tools (you can use things you have at home like old toothbrushes, knives, toothpicks, rollers, scissors, etc.). Add in some pasta, or other loose parts (things such as lids, buttons, sticks, nails, small rocks, etc.) and let them do the rest!

Your kids will come up with some pretty creative pieces, I promise!

I hope you give these invitations a try! Like I said, you can make them as easy or “fancy” as you desire! But I suggest keeping it simple so it’s something you feel comfortable doing often.

I usually try to set up before the kids get home from school and that way, they can go right to it while they have a snack and unwind from their day.  These are just a few ideas, but as you start doing it, you will come up with your very own, based on the things you have at home.
